Introduction
Borage oil is known as one of the main natural sources of the essential omega-6 fatty acid GLA (gamma-linolenic acid). Nutrivian Borage Oil contains 1000 mg of pure and cold-pressed borage oil per softgel capsule, of which 200 mg GLA. To protect the fatty acids against oxidation, 10 mg of natural vitamin E has been added per capsule.
Saturated and Unsaturated Fats
Saturated Fats
With fats it is important to distinguish between saturated fats and unsaturated fats. Saturated fat, such as found in cookies, pastries, fast food, margarine, frying fat, chips, etc., should be avoided as much as possible. Saturated fats are bad for your health and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Unsaturated Fats
Unsaturated fats, and especially polyunsaturated fatty acids, have a beneficial effect on health. A distinction can be made between omega-3 fatty acids (Alpha-Linolenic acid, EPA and DHA) and omega-6 fatty acids (GLA). These healthy fats can be found in vegetable sources such as nuts and seeds, and in animal products such as fatty fish such as herring, salmon, mackerel, tuna, sardines and anchovies.
Omega-6 Fatty Acid GLA
Good sources of the omega-6 fatty acid GLA are evening primrose oil and borage oil, of which borage oil contains twice as much GLA as evening primrose oil. Borage oil is extracted from the seeds of the borage plant (Borago officinalis).
Protection against Oxidation
Unsaturated fatty acids are sensitive to oxidation. By adding vitamin E, which has a strong antioxidant effect, oxidation of the fatty acids can be prevented. That is why 10 mg per softgel capsule has been added to Nutrivian Borage Oil, which means that taking a separate vitamin E supplement is no longer necessary.
Omega-6 Fatty Acid in Western Diet
It is sometimes said that the average Western diet contains too many omega-6 fatty acids. This concerns the fatty acid linoleic acid. The fatty acid GLA is often deficient in our diet, which is why a nutritional supplement can provide a solution.
Combination with Zinc Methionine
Borage oil is often combined with Nutrivian Zinc Methionine, as zinc contributes to normal hormone levels and also supports the skin's ability to recover.
