What is Astaxanthin?
Astaxanthin belongs to the category of carotenoids , a group of substances that mainly come from plants and fruits. Astaxanthin is one of the most powerful antioxidants nature has to offer. The carotenoid is a more powerful antioxidant than vitamin E, vitamin C and beta-carotene.
The substance is produced by algae, plankton and various micro-organisms. As previously indicated, astaxanthin falls under the group of carotenoids, natural dyes that are responsible for the yellow, orange and red color in vegetables and fruit.
The richest natural source of astaxanthin is Haematococcus pluvialis , which is also called the blood rain algae because of its deep red color. The animals that eat these algae therefore acquire a distinctive pink-red color. Think of salmon, lobster, crab, trout and shrimp. Some birds also ingest this dye, such as the flamingo.

Astaxanthin can easily embed itself in the lipid (fat) components of the cell membrane and therefore protect the cell membrane against oxidative stress and other harmful external influences. In addition, astaxanthin can also protect the inside of the cell membrane because it has a hydrophilic (water-loving) component. This allows astaxanthin to also enter the watery parts of the cell and thus protect the cell against harmful influences from within.
