Butyrate (butyric acid) is a short-chain fatty acid that is naturally produced in the large intestine by fermenting fiber. It plays an essential role in the maintenance and repair of the intestinal wall, regulating inflammation and nourishing intestinal cells (colonocytes). In case of disturbed intestinal flora, intestinal inflammation or increased permeability of the intestinal wall ('leaky gut'), supplementation with butyrate can provide a solution.
