What are BCAAs?
BCAAs are an abbreviation for Branched-Chain Amino Acids, which means branched-chain amino acids in Dutch. These are three essential amino acids that naturally occur in protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds. The three amino acids are leucine, isoleucine and valine. BCAAs are known to be found mainly in the muscles and play an important role in muscle growth and maintenance of muscle mass.
What are amino acids?
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and have various functions in the body. The body can produce 11 of the 20 amino acids itself, but the other nine amino acids must be obtained through the diet. These nine amino acids are called essential amino acids, including the three BCAAs.
Proteins are essential for our body, they are the building blocks of our cells and tissues. Proteins contribute to the maintenance and growth of muscle mass and the maintenance of normal bones.
Who are BCAA supplements suitable for?
BCAA supplements are mainly used by people with an active lifestyle, such as athletes and bodybuilders, to support muscle growth and recovery. BCAA supplements are available in different forms, such as powders and capsules.
People who are on a low-calorie diet or find themselves in a calorie deficit can also benefit from taking BCAA supplements to help prevent their bodies from breaking down muscle tissue for energy.
However, it is important to remember that nutritional supplements, including BCAAs, are not intended to replace a healthy and balanced diet. It is therefore always advisable to first optimize your diet and training program before you start using supplements.
What are BCAA supplements made of?
Many BCAA supplements are made from animal sources, such as beef, pork or fish. A unique aspect of Mattisson BCAA supplements is that they come from plant-based sources and are therefore suitable for vegans and vegetarians. In addition, plant-based BCAA supplements often have the advantage of being free of lactose, gluten and other allergens.
The manufacturing process of BCAA supplements usually involves a process of hydrolysis, filtration and concentration to separate and isolate the amino acids. The resulting powder can then be processed into capsules, tablets, powders or drinks.
