Lactoferrin is a type of protein that is mainly found in the breast milk of mammals, both humans and animals. The first breast milk produced, called colostrum, is particularly rich in this substance.
Hence the word 'lacto', which refers to the richest source: milk. However, 'Ferrin' refers to lactoferrin's important ability to bind to iron.
Immediately after birth, we receive large amounts of lactoferrin through our first breast milk. However, this decreases sharply afterwards.
