B12 Adenosylcobalamin
What is Vitamin B12?
Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is part of the vitamin B complex, which consists of eight B vitamins. It is a water-soluble vitamin with many functions, including:
- It helps in the production of red blood cells
- Supports homocysteine metabolism
- Contributes to brain and nerve functions
- Is involved in memory
- Helps to reduce fatigue and listlessness
- Plays a role in the process of tissue growth and development
- Has a positive effect on the immune system
Vitamin B12 in our diet
Vitamin B12 is mainly found in animal foods. A strict vegan diet can therefore lead to a vitamin B12 deficiency. The richest source of vitamin B12 is liver, followed by other animal products such as meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products. Plant foods only contain vitamin B12 in very small amounts when bacterial fermentation has taken place, such as in sauerkraut.
