Growth of almonds
Almonds grow on almond trees. They start as a flower and grow from there into a complete fruit. To get there, the almond trees are in 'hibernation' from December to February. During this period the trees are recovering and being prepared for the next harvest. During this period the almond trees are already growing buds. From January the weather gets warmer, so the buds start to grow faster. The almond trees blossom in February. The period afterwards is very important. There should be no frost at all, the temperature should be mild (12 to 15 degrees) and it should preferably rain as little as possible. Under these conditions the bees can best fertilize the almond trees. After fertilization, the flower grows into a soft gray-green fruit that is fully mature in July. The skin of the almond fruit will begin to harden and will eventually crack open. In the period between July and October, the fruit splits open further and further to allow the almond to dry. The nut eventually splits completely from the fruit and shortly before harvest the shell opens completely.
Our almonds come from Europe.
