Acetyl-L-Carnitine 500 mg from Vitakruid
A semi-essential amino acid
As a rule, our body produces the semi-essential amino acid l-carnitine from l-methionine and l-lysine, but a lot can go wrong with this conversion process. Factors such as surgery, diet, rapid growth or heavy exercise can also cause a semi-essential amino acid to become essential. The speed at which our body absorbs the amino acid is then insufficient to meet our needs.
Vegetarians and vegans quickly experience imbalances
In addition, adequate carnitine levels can be difficult to achieve, especially for vegetarians and vegans. The semi-essential amino acid is mainly found in animal proteins; meat and dairy are the main sources. So if you follow a lifestyle with little to no animal products, supplementation with Acetyl-L-Carnitine 500 mg can be of added value.
Highly bioavailable form of carnitine
As the name suggests, we exclusively use the l-structure form of carnitine for Acetyl-L-Carnitine 500 mg. From a biochemical perspective, the multifunctional amino acid has two forms, the l- and d-structural forms. The body only recognizes the l-structure shape (left-handed shape) as natural. The mirrored shape, the d-shape, does not occur in living material and is therefore referred to as synthetic.
Well absorbed by acetyl
Acetyl is in fact a molecular part, so the acetyl group is not a molecule in itself. You can compare it with an arm or a leg, very functional within the whole of a body, but worthless in itself. Nevertheless, the coupling of acetyl with carnitine has great value within our body. Three properties of the molecule ensure a more efficient passage through the cell membrane:
- Acetyl is a lipid-like compound, which allows the intestine to absorb the molecule as a whole.
- The acetyl bond protects the molecule against oxidation, which results in rapid spread in the cell.
- The enzymes in our cells can split this bond very quickly. As a result, the body absorbs acetyl-l-carnitine well, unlike regular carnitine.
A high dosage of 500 mg per tablet
In addition to the quality of the nutrient, the dosage is of course also important. A higher dosage simply provides more active substances and therefore a greater effect. Most acetyl-l-carnitine supplements contain between 250 and 400 mg per capsule. In contrast, the studies conducted with this amino acid use doses between 500 and 2000 mg. That is why Vitakruid's Acetyl-L-Carnitine contains no less than 500 mg acetyl-l-carnitine per capsule and it is recommended to take two to four capsules per day!
